This September, let’s continue the tradition that Dave W3VXT started. Everyone who participated in the last few years had a blast and we hope to continue the tradition again this year.

Date & Time: Saturday September 19th 2020. 7pm to 10pm local time.

Objective: To make as many contacts as possible simplex only, no repeaters… and to have fun!

Exchange: Callsign, Contact Number Zipcode

Contacts: Work as many different calls and locations as possible. Work each station one per zip code. Mobile can rework stations whenever they change locations. Remember that hilltops work best.

Skyview Founders Day – Oct. 17th.

Our annual Skyview Founders Day will be held Oct. 17th. This will be our third year. In previous years we have exceeded 400 QSO’s.  This is an on the air special event to honor the club’s founding members. We operate from the club house and all are welcome to participate. It’s a very relaxed event and a great opportunity for new members to get on the air.


The BUM luncheon will be Monday 9/14/2020 at noon at the usual venue Jabby Joes Island Ave Mckees Rocks. I called Jabby Joe’s regarding the Bum o’ the Month luncheon and Sue says they’re open with limited capacity.   The max she can put in one group with tables put together is eight.   More than that would have to be at separate tables or outside.

For the  Chapter 6 QCWA members, the Fall quarterly meeting has been canceled, and the scheduling of the Winter meeting will be determined later in the year.


The ISS – FM cross band repeater

The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) announcement reads:

The ARISS team is pleased to announce that set up and installation of the first element of our next generation radio system was completed and amateur radio operations with it are now underway. This first element, dubbed the InterOperable Radio System (IORS), was installed in the International Space Station Columbus module. The IORS replaces the Ericsson radio system and packet module that were originally certified for spaceflight on July 26, 2000.

Initial operation of the new radio system is in FM cross band repeater mode using an uplink frequency of 145.990 MHz with an access tone [CTCSS] of 67 Hz and a downlink frequency of 437.800 MHz. System activation was first observed at 01:02 UTC on September 2. Special operations will continue to be announced.

Steel City – PA QSO Planning

Okay folks as we discussed at the last meeting I am working on planning operations for the PA QSO Party from the club house this year. Due to covid I am trying to limit the crowd but insure everyone that wants to, gets an opportunity to come up and operate.

My current thought process is that we should be able to support 2-3 simultaneous operators and to keep inline with the social distancing recommendations we should limit the number of people inside the building to 6 – 10 at any one time. Depending on the weather we can have more folks than we can fit in the building come up and hang around outside for camaraderie and welcome any such spur of the moment visitation.

If we have any folks that are not able to or that are uncomfortable with operating in person from the club we may be able to work out some remote participation, please send me an e-mail directly to discuss.

Breezeshooters WSPR Contest

Saturday September 5th 2020 6pm-10pm (22:00-2:00 UTC) using 5 watts 10m WSPR digital mode, stations in Western PA see how many unique stations copy you within 160km (about 100 miles, wspr software is in km).

WSPR mode on 28.1246 MHz USB (10 meter band)
5 watts power No more than 20% fraction (station transmits 20% of the time and receives 80%) Vertical or Horizontal (Most local 10m stations run vertical)

To send in your log for scoring, download unique stations within 160km that copied you during the contest from the WSPR Database and send them in to AC3DB webmaster@breezeshooters.org by 9/11/2020

Solar Power Ham Radio

For you POTA and SOTA folks here is an another option for power when your are out in the field.  Here is an solar panel with a built in battery bank.

Those of you that know me know I spend a lot of time out in the field.  Camping and radio operating. A while back I had bought a 60 fold up solar panel that not only puts out 5v USB voltage but also 18v for charging batteries. On my recent camping trip in the Adirondacks I used that panel to keep our cell phones charges. {Which work even with us under a tree canopy.}  But I use LiFePO4 lithium batteries for my radio.  Which you just can use any old solar charger since most are made for Lead Acid batteries.   I found the item  below when I got home from that trip a small compact solar charger made for LiFePO4 batteries.  I found this at Powerwerx for $29.99 and it works. it takes any solar panel over 16 volts and 12 amps and it will charge the battery right up to the 14.56 volts which is what LiFePO4 batteries take.  I replaced the solar power connectors with anderson poles. to match by folding panel and it fully charge my 6 ah battery pack in 3 hours.
