This all started with a couple of members trying out this new service “Hamshack Hotline” that we found interesting. It was a great service to keep SCARC members in touch with each other. After several years that service decided to shut down. Since the introduction our VoIP group group grew in numbers. So we decided to switch over to a very similar service called “Hams Over IP” {HOIP} which is a Voice over IP service for hams radio operators made by hams. This is a free service all you have to do is pick up an VoIP phone create a ticket with HOIP and program it with your new extension number. Your on and now you too can join our Tuesday night chat room.
What do we do with this? what ever you want our chat session are a free for all. It a great place to find out what going on with the club or asking a troubleshooting questions. Our conference bridge is open to all license ham radio operators. So feel free to join us even if your not a member of SCARC.
If you are interested in HOIP service reach out to Karl, WA3VXJ or Christine, N3LRG to find where to purchase the refurbished Cisco IP Phone. We have purchase them from Amazon and Ebay and both have worked and they have cost from $20 to $30. Please make sure you reach out to the sellers to make sure the phones are unlocked. Since most home internet routers are not “Power over Ethernet” you will need to pick up an AC adapter or an “Power over Ethernet” injector. While HOIP will work with any VoIP phone we like the Cisco models are Cisco SPA-303, SPA-504, SPA-525. You can also get the Cisco IP Adapter SPA-112 which is an adapter that lets you use any current touch tone phone on the HOIP network.
How to sign up:
- Purchase an VoIP phone off of Ebay or Amazon
- Open a ticket to create an account with HOIP
- Open A ticket to create a new extension in North America
- Wait until the next day {4AM}
- Program your phone with the HOIP information email.
